Jeff Merkley defeated two Democratic challengers with 93% of the vote in the Oregon Primary on May 20. He has a Republican opponent, Monica Wehby, a pediatriac neorosurgeon. She defeated four Republican opponents with 54% of the vote in the Republican primary. Merkley was the Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives and defeated a two-term Republican, Gordon H. Smith, in 2008.
